Environment

As energy companies around the world increase their focus on developing sustainable low carbon solutions, our priority and value lies in providing the skilled engineers and technical workforce needed to help our clients achieve their net zero commitment by 2050 and provide a brighter tomorrow.

Working Towards Net Zero

We recognise that as an international business emissions from the air travel we undertake to conduct business are challenging to avoid, so we ensure that we offset these emissions through investing in responsible carbon-offset projects.

This year we are proud to have offset 100% of the business travel of our 2,200+ employees, making our entire corporate footprint carbon neutral and ensuring that as a business we not only provide the expertise to transform the world’s energy supply, but we also protect ecosystems and improve lives, livelihoods and landscapes for local communities around the world.

Community Investment

We have invested in the following community projects:

Improving carbon sequestration and enhancing biodiversity on degraded lands

Located in the Guizhou Province of China, 47k hectares of forest will be grown as a result of the Afforestation by planting native trees with long maturities – firs, cypresses and pines. The initiative is expected to remove an average of 731,897t CO2e annually over its lifetime, just over 21 million tonnes in total. The project also protects the globally endangered species, the Francois’ Leaf Monkey. So far the project has created over 16,000 jobs for local villagers, of which 70% are held by women, increasing their local villager’s income and wellbeing.

Restoring degraded forest reserves

Located in the Ashanti region of Ghana, this project plans to reforest 15k hectares in total by establishing a large, sustainable, commercial plantation with teak and indigenous tree species. 15 native species will be planted, including endangered species. The project provides more than 1,000 jobs, 40% of which are held by women, and supports 500 farmers through intercropping, allowing them to plant food crops between planted trees.

Providing energy efficient cookstoves to remote Indian villages – this project focuses on providing more energy efficient cookstoves to domestic households, reducing fuel use and lowering household pollution.

The stoves also save families valuable time previously spent collecting firewood, increasing economic opportunities and income. The project specifically helps the underrepresented, with an additional focus on women, enabling them to develop entrepreneurial skills and helping them be part of the social dialogue.

Peatland restoration and conservation

This project, located in Central Kalimantan, helps communities use resources in a sustainable manner and supports innovation to develop environmentally friendly products which inspire locals to protect the forests. The peatland is 26,000 years old and stores nearly half a billion tonnes of carbon which would be released over 60 years without the protection of the project area. As well as protecting 5 critically endangered species, 8 endangered species and 31 vulnerable species, the project enhances the quality of life and reduces poverty by creating economic opportunities and sustainable livelihood options.

Rehabilitating boreholes to provide clean water to communities

The project enables a reduced reliance on firewood for water purification, preserves existing forest stock, and protects natural forest, ecosystems and wildlife habitats. The clean water improves sanitation and hygiene and money that was used to treat disease and fund hospital visits can now be used at household levels for other purposes.
