Instrument & Electrical (I&E) Inspector

The Instrument & Electrical (I&E) Inspector ensures that all instrumentation and electrical quality requirements of construction are met according to company procedures and international codes of practice. The role requires a thorough understanding of I&E construction practices in a petrochemical or process plant environment, adhering to applicable codes and standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Verify compliance with contract requirements by monitoring and attending witness and hold points from goods receiving to commissioning.
  2. Ensure field instrumentation, cables, grounding, junction boxes, tubing, piping, and related electrical and instrumentation equipment are installed according to construction drawings.
  3. Calibrate field instruments and control valves as per specifications and standards.
  4. Maintain thorough familiarity with project codes, standards, schedules, drawings, and documentation.
  5. Evaluate the installation of electrical systems, ensuring adherence to project electrical codes and standards.
  6. Maintain records of inspection activities and complete daily inspection reports highlighting findings.
  7. Review contractor’s test and inspection methods, witness, and sign off as required.
  8. Perform requisite QA/QC tests on all field instrumentation, cables, grounding, junction boxes, tubing, piping, and related electrical and instrumentation equipment.
  9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and contractor personnel.
  10. Collaborate with contractors to solve problems and consult with the project I&E engineer to ensure compliance.
  11. Review and approve contractor method statements for field construction activities.
  12. Review project documentation, including Construction Dossiers, Instrument & Electrical drawings, equipment data sheets, and Mechanical Data Books.
  13. Participate in project review meetings.
  14. Engage in risk assessments such as JSRAs, What-Ifs, and contingency planning.
  15. Review procedures and verify proper electrical isolation using LOTTO before fieldwork commences.
  16. Provide support for fieldwork, ensuring adherence to established safe practices and procedures.
  17. Participate in construction walk-downs and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs).
  18. Support and actively participate in pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including punch listing, loop checks, troubleshooting field instrumentation, quality checks, and powering up and testing electrical equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. UTT or NEC National Technician Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering.
  2. At least 12 years of overall experience, with a minimum of 7 years in I&E construction, turnaround, and commissioning in the Oil and Gas Industry.

Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
  • Proficiency in computer use.
  • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good technical writing skills.
  • Proven experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Proven ability to understand and interpret technical specifications and drawings.
