Laboratory Technician

My client is urgently seeking a Laboratory Technician for their Wilmington, CA refinery! The successful candidate must have fuels testing experience. Asphalt or waste water experience is also acceptable. Previous refinery/petroleum experience is preferred. 

This position will begin as a contract and has the intent to turn direct. 

Position Summary:


This position is in the Technical Division/Laboratory.  The duties include, but are not limited to: analysis of unit process samples according ASTM methods, Standard Operating Procedures derived from the ASTM methods, AASHTO, AMS, API and various other in-house procedures.

Job Duties:
  • Safely performs physical and chemical analyses with a high degree of precision and accuracy following ASTM methods, Standard Operating Procedures that are derived from the ASTM methods, AASHTO, AMS, API and various other in-house procedures.
  • Conduct the business of the laboratory in an expeditious and reasonable manner based on directives and requests of the Laboratory Supervisors or Lead Lab Technician.
  • Work with a Lead Laboratory Technician or Chemist on the documentation of test results and timely reporting of those results to customers.
  • Recognize when the quality of the analysis is suspect and take corrective actions.
  • Set up, run and shutdown laboratory equipment
  • Safely handle and transport chemicals, reagents, and samples of process streams.
  • Perform housekeeping in personal work areas as well as assigned areas of the laboratory.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety data sheets that describe the hazards of the materials used in the laboratory.
  • Work overtime as required
  • Other duties as assigned.
Competencies:
  • Knowledge of all aspects of refinery lab operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of petroleum laboratory test methods, procedures, software, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret company policies, regulatory guidelines, and other work-related documentation.
  • Ability to abide by confidentiality requirements when working with sensitive information, results, and communications.
  • Skill in providing thorough, efficient, and effective customer service to individuals within the organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal methods.
  • Ability to accomplish work within required timelines, including short, long, and emergency timeframes.
  • Ability to work with others to accomplish challenging assignments.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure completion of tasks within stated time requirements.
  • Basic skill using Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word and Excel).
 Education and Experience (required):
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 3 years petroleum/analytical laboratory experience required.
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Laboratory Science
  • Knowledge of ASTM and AASHTO methods for petroleum products
  • Knowledge of wastewater testing method
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 3 years petroleum/analytical laboratory experience required.

Other Job Requirements:
  • Must be able to regularly work on a full time basis at the assigned location and arrive to work at scheduled start time.
  • Must be able to work a rotating 4-On/4-Off - 12 hours shift schedule
  • Must be able to work overtime as required
  • Must comply with all safety and health standards, rules, and regulations and must inform their supervisory personnel and other employees of any and all unsafe working conditions that may exist.
 Physical Demands:
  • Moderate Work:  Work involves sitting, standing, and/or moving from one location to another.  Typically includes exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.  Might include ability to climb, balance, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl at differing elevations.
