Civil Construction Quantity Surveyor/ Estimator

Excavat are a well-established and local Taranaki Civil Construction company based in Hawera. They cover everything in the civil industry such as ground/earth works, drainage, site preps, effluent systems and roading in Taranaki and Whanganui.  Excavat have the reputation of partnering with their clients on all of their earthmoving needs and are known for their reliable service, exceptional quality, and a commitment to customer satisfaction.

We are looking for an experienced detail-oriented and experienced Quantity Surveyor/Estimator to manage the financial aspects of their construction projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate cost estimations, quantity take-offs, preparing tender submissions, and financial project monitoring. The successful person will be taking full ownership of tenders allocated, ensuring accurate measuring, pricing, and subcontractor assessments are presented while analysing risks associated with tenders and building them into the estimates where relevant.

Key Responsibilities will include:
  • The preparation of detailed and accurate cost estimates for civil construction projects
  • Conducting thorough quantity take-offs from construction plans and specifications
  • Prepare competitive tender submissions and bid documentation
  • Analyse subcontractor quotes and material supplier proposals
  • Perform cost-benefit analyses and value engineering
  • Monitor project costs against budgets and forecast final costs
  • Prepare monthly progress claims and variations
  • Liaise with project managers, engineers, and clients
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market rates and construction methodologies
  • Assist in contract negotiations and procurement strategies

Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in civil construction estimating
  • Proficient in industry-standard estimating software
  • Strong understanding of civil construction methods and materials
  • Excellent knowledge of contract documentation and tendering processes
  • Experience with NZS3910 and other relevant construction contracts

We are looking for someone with ideally a relevant qualification in quantity surveying or Construction with proficiency in electronic tendering systems.  You will have the ability to work autonomously, managing workloads effectively while maintaining attention to detail.

To thrive in this role, you will bring a methodical, meticulous, and analytical approach to work, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while ensuring project programmes are delivered. You will have strong problem-solving skills with the confidence to address any issues that may arise during the bid process

This is a full-time permanent role generally working Monday to Friday and this role is best suited to someone who has a can-do attitude and a strong background in civil construction is required. You must have the ability to adhere to company values, procedures and Health and Safety requirements while also ensuring great customer service and respect.
